The Israeli art scene is in turmoil over the belated call for proposals for the Israeli national pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale. Following Ruth Patir and the curators’ controversial decision not to open the pavilion in 2024 “until a ceasefire and the release of hostages were reached”, the Ministry of Culture added sanctions for artists who fail to keep the pavilion open.
This fuels the debate: with most Israeli artists opposing the government and the war, is boycotting the process the right move? In this context, does an Israeli artist represent the people of Israel or the regime? Do we have the privilege of being absent from such an important international event? How do we maintain an ethical core in the face of these complexities? As if being an Israeli artist weren’t already intense these days(i.e.).
For me, since Oct 7, it’s a constant challenge to speak my native identity in a way that resonates universally. PoppyPink is my purest expression of that so far.
PoppyPink is a minimalist performance piece premiered in Central Park, New York, commemorating the one-year memorial of Oct 7. The work aims to raise awareness of the Israeli hostage crisis and advocate for human rights. 48 hostages are still being held captive in Gaza. We will not find peace until they are back home!
